To have the greatest impact in our efforts to preserve our architectural
heritage, we believe it helps to speak a common language. For example, are you
planning to restore, rehabilitate or remodel your home? Each represents a very
different approach with very different requirements.
Restoration This approach involves returning the building to its
original appearance. Materials from the most significant time in the property’s
history are retained. Materials from other periods are removed and replaced with
elements from the most significant time period.
Rehabilitation This approach emphasizes the repair and retention of
significant historic materials and features while adapting a building for
contemporary use.
Remodeling This approach alters the design features of a building
without considering the building’s history.
A successful restoration or rehabilitation project requires an understanding
of the architecture and history of the house. Our Resource Library has reference
materials on architectural styles, rehabilitation techniques and individual
files on specific buildings in Dallas. For more information, please call (214)

through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
