| Early Tuesday morning,
March 2, Dallas lost one of its best examples of a 1920’s commercial
strip that included Terilli’s, The Hurricane Grill, Mick’s
Bar, and Greenville Bar & Grill. The fire ravaged a neighborhood landmark
that will not be easily replaced. We are reminded by this loss of how
historic places matter.
For nearly forty years, Preservation Dallas has recognized and sought
to preserve Dallas’ history. Many of our greatest landmarks have,
at some point, been endangered from neglect or abandonment. Buildings
like Old Parkland Hospital, the West End historic district, residences
on Swiss Avenue, the Women’s Museum at Fair Park, and St. Joseph’s
Catholic Church and Academy are STANDING examples of how old buildings
can breathe new life.
Preservation Dallas is now accepting nominations for Dallas’ Most
Endangered Historic Places List through April 9th. The 2010 list will
be announced on Wednesday, May 5th in honor of National Historic Preservation
month. The list recognizes endangered historic places that make significant
contributions to our city and reflect the lives of community leaders,
architects, developers, and the families who have made a home in Dallas.
Preservation Dallas encourages people to look around carefully for endangered
landmarks that are important to them. Many times we focus on the large
historic buildings, but smaller, often-overlooked places, are equally
important to the city. Endangered sites might include businesses, schools,
parks, neighborhood features, signs, or places of worship.
A nomination form is available online
at www.preservationdallas.org and you can call Sara Junkin, Events Coordinator,
at 214-821-3290 with any questions. The submission deadline is Friday,
April 9, at 4 p.m.
