Preservation Dallas offers visitors a chance to see Dallas history first hand through tours of the Wilson Historic District and the St. James African Methodist Episcopal (AME) church. Restored and maintained through generous support from the Meadows Foundation, both are compelling examples of successful adaptive reuse and the importance of restoration that maintains the architectural integrity.
The Wilson Historic District is a stunning collection of beautifully restored Victorian architecture on Swiss Avenue. The buildings, including the Wilson House, Preservation Dallas’ Queen Anne Victorian mansion headquarters, now serve as a unique campus for non-profit organizations. Maintenance and tours of the neighborhood are made possible through continuing support by the Meadows Foundation.
The St. James AME church, designed by Dallas’ first African American architect William Sydney Pittman, was built between 1919 and 1921. The Meadows Foundation’s restoration efforts, including the exterior façade and rehabilitation of the interior, have preserved this elegant piece of Pittman’s architectural legacy.
