Through our education programs, Preservation Dallas provides a valuable resource for residents, homeowners, realtors and developers interested in historic properties. We focus on the importance of appropriate restoration through the following:
Historic House Specialist Certification for Realtors
Preservation Dallas created this intensive two-day seminar to assist realtors in marketing Dallas' intown neighborhoods. The seminar includes an orientation to the Preservation Dallas Intown Living Center, which is available for research, displays and information on more than 160 intown neighborhoods, and presentations by local experts. More than 250 Dallas realtors have been certified as Historic House Specialists.
Restoration Workshops
Each spring, Preservation Dallas offers a series of hands-on and how-to workshops for owners and maintainers of historic structures. These workshops, held in even-numbered months, focus on proper techniques for restoration that maintain the historic integrity of the structure. The workshops are typically three hours of intensive instruction from restoration experts and focus on the value of using original materials to maintain and enhance property values. Workshops have included:
- "Caring for and Preparing Wood Windows," taught by window restoration experts, Leeds-Clark,
- Paint selection
- Researching property histories
- Brick maintenance and repair.
- Fireplace and fireplace tile maintenance
- Floorings, wallpaper and wall coverings
- New building designs in historic districts
- Plaster repair
Third Evening Lecture Series
Preservation Dallas developed a lecture series to focus on regional history and historic preservation topics. Held on the third Thursday of odd-numbered months, the Third Evening Lecture Series features regional experts, consultants and authors. Topics have included the regional history and preservation of Los Caminos del Rio and historic Texas interiors.
Annual Dallas History Conference
Preservation Dallas is proud to be one of organizers of the Annual Dallas History Conference, which focuses on the different aspects of Dallas' history. Themes have included how "Historic Neighborhoods: Basis of a Community" and "The Forces that Shaped Dallas." Topics and presenters span a range of interests to appeal to anyone interested in learning more about Dallas' history.
Legacies
Preservation Dallas also sponsors Legacies: A History Journal for Dallas and North Central Texas, a journal published twice a year by Old City Park, County Heritage Society, The Dallas Historical Society and the Sixth Floor Museum.
